Even before the start of the new alpine skiing World Cup season, Mikaela Shiffrin caused a stir with her announcement that she would compete in significantly fewer slaloms this season.

The 31-year-old American intends to focus more on giant slalom and Super-G this year – and cut back on her absolute specialty, the slalom.

World Cup return in Killington

Back in October, Shiffrin announced her plan to skip the first World Cup slaloms of the season in Levi (Nov 14) and Gurgl (Nov 21). She is now putting that plan into action.

"See you in Killington," Shiffrin shared in her latest Instagram post. A giant slalom will take place in Killington on November 28, followed by a slalom on November 29.

First slalom training sessions this week

The American has not had much time to train slalom yet. In fact, as she revealed in the same Instagram post, this week marked the first time she had been back on slalom skis since the World Cup finals in Hafjell last March.

Shiffrin is by far the most successful slalom skier in history. She has won 73 World Cup slaloms, nine of them last season alone. In addition to nine slalom crystal globes, she has also won World Championship gold four times, as well as Olympic gold in slalom in 2014 and 2026.
