Sofia Goggia speaks after diagnosis: "I am deeply saddened"
The Italian speed queen had to cut short her training camp in South America. It has now been determined what is ailing the 33-year-old.
Sofia Goggia's preparation for the upcoming Ski World Cup season has been far from optimal so far.
The 33-year-old skier complained of feeling unwell during the training camp in Ushuaia, Argentina, and therefore had to leave South America in mid-September to undergo examinations in Italy.
The Italian Ski Federation has now also confirmed Goggia's diagnosis >>>
Shortly thereafter, Goggia also followed suit. Via Instagram, she spoke out: "I am deeply saddened that I was forced to abandon my preparation."
She is particularly bothered by the fact that the first weeks of preparation had actually gone very well, but the forced break has changed a lot.
Goggia feels "quite weakened"
"Now that the truth has come to light and we have identified the problem (I had two viral infections that caused me "special" symptoms), we can move forward with the solution, but that requires a lot of time and a lot, a lot of patience... a bit like always," Goggia addresses her problematic injury history.
Currently, the Italian still feels "quite weakened." Whether a start at the World Cup opener on October 24 in Sölden is an option remains to be seen.
Goggia is one of the most successful downhill skiers in history. In addition to four small downhill crystal globes, she also won Olympic gold in the premier discipline in 2018. Last season, the Italian won the Super-G World Cup for the first time in her career.
