Ted Ligety is eagerly awaiting the World Cup start in Sölden (Sunday, from 10:00 AM in the LIVE ticker >>>).

The former giant slalom specialist will be live in Tyrol this weekend. "It's only my second time there since retiring, the first time in four years – I'm looking forward to returning, the mountain was always good to me," he told the "Kronen Zeitung".

The 42-year-old secured four victories on the Rettenbachferner and is currently still the record holder. However, Swiss Marco Odermatt could equal Ligety with a triumph.

"The greatest opponent I ever had"

In the past, the American engaged in exciting duels with Marcel Hirscher. However, the Austrian, who competes under the Dutch flag, is not yet competing in Sölden.

"It's a shame I won't see him race in Sölden. But for me, it's a good sign that he was training in Argentina and is taking his time," Ligety said. "I would never bet against him. If he feels good and is in form, he's capable of anything. He was the greatest opponent I ever had."

Hirscher isn't that old yet and could win races again, "if he has all his puzzle pieces together."
