Shortly before World Cup start: FIS Race Director Waldner quits!
The men's race director is stepping down from his post. "I do not take this decision lightly."
After twelve years in office, Markus Waldner announced his resignation as FIS Men's Race Director just weeks before the start of the new Ski World Cup season.
"I do not take this decision lightly," the South Tyrolean is quoted as saying in a FIS press release. "Bearing the responsibility for alpine skiing at the highest level is a privilege, but it is also a position that comes with enormous pressure."
"Over the years – as FIS and the sport have evolved and grown – this pressure has continuously built up, to the point where I feel I no longer have the necessary energy and the right mindset to approach another full season the way I would have wanted," said Waldner.
Successor Still Open, Waldner Expected to Remain with FIS
Waldner has served as FIS Men's Alpine Race Director since 2014. As confirmed by the international ski federation, Waldner will continue to support FIS during the transition period until a successor is found.
The first men's World Cup race of the new season is scheduled for October 25 in Sölden. Until further notice, Peter Gerdol, FIS Women's Race Director, will also oversee the men's World Cup competitions.
However, FIS will not have to completely do without Waldner in the future. Discussions are currently underway regarding a new position for the likeable South Tyrolean within the world federation.
