Head of 2027 Ski World Championships OC Resigns After Fraud Allegations
The Swiss national was suspended from his positions by the federation before he announced his resignation shortly thereafter.
There is unrest in the organizing team for the 2027 Ski World Championships in Crans Montana.
The now-former OC boss Claude-Alain Schmidhalter must appear in court. The 62-year-old is accused of fraud and breach of trust in business management. This became known at the beginning of the week.
However, the indictment is reportedly not related to his sports activities concerning the World Championships, but rather concerns his own engineering firm.
Schmidhalter Does Not Want to Harm World Championships Project
Swiss-Ski subsequently temporarily relieved him of all his duties. Schmidhalter announced shortly after that he would be stepping down:
"I am drawing the consequences from this and am resigning effective immediately as President of the Organizing Committee for the 2027 Ski World Championships and as Vice-President of Swiss-Ski."
According to his statement, the resignation is not because he has anything to reproach himself for, but because he does not want to harm the World Championships in Crans Montana: "An OC president who is on indefinite leave a few months before the championships harms the project, which I have been fully committed to for years. I don't want that."
Sebastian Rey and Diego Züger will take over on an interim basis.
