Graz99ers remain winless in CHL even in fifth game
Again, it's not enough for a win. At times, they manage to keep pace with their Finnish opponents.
Even in the fifth round of the Champions Hockey League, the Graz99ers suffered another defeat. The Styrians lost 1:3 to SaiPa Lappeenranta from Finland.
As early as the ninth minute, Saku Salminen put the visitors ahead. After falling behind, Graz created several good opportunities but couldn't convert them, thwarted by poor finishing and a strong Finnish goalkeeper.
In the second period, Janne Naukkarinen extended the visitors' lead to 0:2 (30'). Shortly after, Graz found themselves playing with a double man disadvantage, which Petr Fridrich capitalized on to score the decisive 0:3 for the Finns (35').
Graz99ers Score Consolation Goal
In the final period, Nick Swaney scored a consolation goal for the Graz99ers, making it 1:3.
However, a comeback never materialized. It was particularly frustrating that they failed to capitalize on a total of six power-play opportunities.
The Graz99ers thus have no further chance of securing a spot in the Top 16 and advancing in the competition. With zero points, the Styrians sit at the bottom of the 24-team league phase standings.
