Sinner after Title Defense: "Most Special Tournament of the Year"

The 24-year-old also wins his tenth consecutive match against Alexander Zverev and secures his fifth Major title. Nevertheless, he remains wary of the German.

Major title number five, Wimbledon triumph number two.

Jannik Sinner continues to be unstoppable. The world No. 1 also wins the grass-court classic at the All England Club in 2026 and defends his title from the previous year.

The South Tyrolean defeats German Alexander Zverev 6:7 (7), 7:6 (2), 6:3, 6:4 (to the match report >>>).

"There's no better place to play tennis," Sinner said after the final, adding: "I don't take anything for granted."

And yet, it was precisely this confidence with which the South Tyrolean played once again that was impressive. Throughout the entire match, he didn't allow Zverev a single break, fending off the German's only break point in the third set. Sinner was there for every promising offensive move by the world No. 3. He ran, blocked, slid, defended, countered.

It was a final with few chances, characterized by incredibly dominant serving from both sides. "We both started well, served quickly," Sinner said. The evenly matched duel was intense even without the biggest moments; Sinner's mother left the stadium multiple times, as the South Tyrolean joked afterwards.

Such a match always requires two players. "We tried everything; of course, I'm very happy about the win – but above all, about the level at which we played," Sinner stated.

"I don't really like you anymore"

The second player needed for such a match did not seem dissatisfied despite the defeat. "We've had a great two months, even if we lost the final. We came here without ever having reached the quarter-finals at Wimbledon."

His first Grand Slam victory in Paris in June likely offered Zverev some comfort regarding another final defeat. He took the result with appropriate sportsmanship: "I don't really like you anymore; I'd already lost to you nine times in a row before this," he said smiling after loss number ten.

"Congratulations, he showed once again why he's the best player in the world. It was great to share Centre Court with you in the final."

A Special Tournament

Both players waxed lyrical after the final of the grass-court classic. Zverev, for example, said he had never felt such support at Wimbledon. "You are one reason why I made it to the final," he praised the crowd. "It's a great honor to play here on Centre Court – also because of the Royal Box."

Sinner echoed similar sentiments: "It's the most special tournament of the year." The nervousness one feels on Sunday morning before the final is almost indescribable. And: You never know how often you might get to feel it again.

"You are very close"

Winning the trophy again is "great." And to Zverev, after his second Major final in a short time: "If you keep going like this, you'll have it here soon too." The German also believes this. "I'm 29 and for the first time, I believe I can win a title here," he said, thanking his team.

Sinner and his staff are warned. "Your goal is to be world number one. You are very close; we now have to be very careful."

He said, and laughed. At least on this day in London, it was still missing just a little bit.
