Lukas Neumayer misses the main draw in Umag!
The 23-year-old Austrian narrowly loses to Germany's Marko Topo (ATP-350.) in two sets, 6:7 (7), 5:7, in the final qualifying round for the ATP 250 tournament in Croatia.
In the first round, the world number 167 still prevailed against local hero Mili Poljicak with a score of 6:4, 4:6, 6:4.
First Set Evenly Contested
The first set starts with an immediate battle. Both players waste no time, taking two of the first three games each. After that, the match calms down a bit and both players hold their serves.
This led to a tie-break, where the German had the upper hand at least initially. Neumayer recovered, however, catching up by four points in the interim. Nevertheless, he had to concede the set 7:9 after over an hour.
The Break Festival Continues
In the second set, both players also had trouble holding their serves. Neumayer broke Topo three times, but was in turn broken three times himself.
At a score of 5:5, the 22-year-old German then managed his fourth break, and this was decisive: He served out the following game, securing both the second set and the match after 2 hours and 20 minutes.
