Mladenovic and Guo Crowned Wimbledon Champions
The tenth-seeded pair defeats the favored Stefani/Dabrowski in two sets in the final. For Hanyu Guo, it is the first Grand Slam title of her career.
The winners of the Wimbledon women's doubles have been decided!
Kristina Mladenovic and Hanyu Guo win the final against the second-seeded Luisa Stefani and Gabriela Dabrowski with a score of 6:3, 7:5, thereby securing the title on London's hallowed grass.
For Mladenovic, it is already the tenth Grand Slam title of her career and her seventh in women's doubles. Guo, on the other hand, can celebrate her first ever Major triumph.
Mladenovic/Guo Get Off to a Furious Start
Stefani and Dabrowski had remained unbeaten in sets until the final, but their opponents got off to a significantly better start in the final.
Mladenovic and Guo broke their opponents' serve twice immediately, taking a 5:0 lead. Although Stefani/Dabrowski managed a re-break to shorten the gap to 3:5, at 5:3, the outsiders didn't let the first set slip away and served out for a 6:3 win.
Decisive Break at the Perfect Moment
The second set was much more balanced.
Stefani and Dabrowski created numerous break opportunities in many return games, but couldn't convert them. As a result, everything remained on serve until 5:5.
Then Mladenovic and Guo struck ruthlessly: With a break to love, they took a 6:5 lead and shortly after served out confidently for a 7:5 match win.
Milestone Title for Mladenovic
For Mladenovic, her impressive Grand Slam success story continues. The Frenchwoman had already won the French Open four times and the Australian Open twice in women's doubles, in addition to three Major titles in mixed doubles.
With her new partner Guo, with whom she has only been playing since this season, the former world number one in doubles now celebrates their first Grand Slam triumph together.
From an Austrian perspective, Mladenovic is also known for her former relationship with ex-ÖTV star Dominic Thiem. The two were a couple between 2017 and 2019.
