Potapova is world number 25 and most recently had to concede a 0:2 defeat to local favorite Sloane Stephens in the first round of the Cincinnati tournament. Before that, the 25-year-old was eliminated in the second round in Toronto.
Her US Open opponent Darja Semenistaja (world number 109) played a successful qualification and was able to qualify for the main draw despite a loss in the qualifying final. The Latvian advanced to the main draw after the injury-related withdrawal of Czech Tereza Valentova.
