Decisive Defeat for Grabher in US Open Opener
In the first set, the Vorarlberg native still kept up well at times, but her opponent won the second set comfortably. After 80 minutes of play, her exit was sealed.
Following Sinja Kraus, Julia Grabher also exited in the first round of the US Open.
The 30-year-old Vorarlberg native (WTA-114.) lost on Court 10 to her Romanian opponent Sorana Cirstea 3:6, 0:6. Although the Romanian received treatment for her calf several times, she had no problems with Grabher, who also needed treatment for neck issues.
In the first set, Grabher fell behind 0:4 early due to two breaks, but Cirstea also showed nerves on her own serve, allowing the ÖTV ace to catch up to 3:4. However, with the break to make it 3:5 and a strong service game, the first set ultimately went to the Romanian, who will retire after this season.
In the second set, Grabher conceded a break right at the start; she could not recover from this setback, and the set went decisively to Cirstea 0:6.
