46-year-old Venus Williams eliminated in first US Open round
Williams keeps pace well, especially in the second set, against compatriot Sofia Kenin.
Tennis star Venus Williams (WTA-618.) suffered an expected defeat in the first round of the US Open 2026.
The 46-year-old American, who was granted a wild card for the singles competition in Flushing Meadows, lost to compatriot Sofia Kenin 2:6, 6:7 (6) after 1 hour and 49 minutes of play.
Williams won US Open 25 years ago
Williams is one of the greatest female tennis players in history, having won the US Open twice in her prime (2000, 2001). In total, she captured seven Grand Slam singles titles – though the last one was in 2008.
Despite her advanced age, Williams is not yet done with professional tennis. She also fell in the first round of the Australian Open this year. Her last match win at a Grand Slam came in 2021 at Wimbledon.
Kenin has also won a Grand Slam tournament, namely the Australian Open in 2020. However, the 27-year-old is currently only ranked 110th in the world.
