A formidable Carlos Alcaraz is playing at the US Open as if his almost four-month injury break had never happened.

Before the tournament in New York, he hadn't played a match since mid-April. And yet, the Spaniard dominates his opponents at will. The 23-year-old dispatches Tommy Paul 6-4, 6-3, 6-4 in straight sets.

The manner of his victory was particularly impressive. Winners delivered with absolute top speed, drop shots to the net at will, and returns he perhaps has never played before. "I am very, very happy with the performance," Alcaraz said.

Ben Shelton awaits in the quarter-finals

His next opponent was no less dominant in his round of 16 match. Ben Shelton also defeated Stefanos Tsitsipas convincingly in straight sets. The American advances to the quarter-finals with a 6-2, 6-3, 6-4 victory.

This match-up has occurred three times so far, with the Spaniard winning every time. However, the two have never met at the US Open.

Shelton knows he will need "special tennis" against Alcaraz. "His level so far has been so impressive," the local favorite said, paying his opponent respect.

The match is on Tuesday.
