"Worst match of the season" - Zverev eliminated in Canada
The world number three makes a surprisingly early exit in the 2nd round of the ATP Masters in Montreal. He is extremely harsh on himself.
Alexander Zverev suffered a tough setback in the first match of his hard-court season. His run at the ATP Masters in Montreal ended in the second round.
The German was defeated by Dutchman Tallon Griekspoor in three sets, 7:6 (3), 2:6, 4:6. For the 29-year-old, it was his first match since his Wimbledon final loss to Jannik Sinner.
Zverev entered the tournament as the top seed, aiming to build confidence ahead of the US Open (August 23 to September 13).
Zverev is self-critical
The tennis season has gone almost perfectly for the German so far. After his first Grand Slam title at the French Open, he reached the Wimbledon final.
"I didn't expect to play so badly, to be honest," said Zverev, who described the match against the Dutchman as "probably the worst match of the season." In the absence of Jannik Sinner, Carlos Alcaraz, and Félix Auger-Aliassime, he was actually considered the top favourite in the tournament.
Ahead of the US Open, the Masters in Cincinnati (starting August 15) is still on the schedule.
