Zverev avoids early exit in Shanghai
The German top seed struggled against Quentin Halys, having to go the full distance.
Alexander Zverev continues his journey at the ATP 1000 hard court tournament.
However, the German struggled in his third-round match against Frenchman Quentin Halys (ATP-48th), ultimately winning 6:4, 6:7(8), 6:3 after 2 hours and 18 minutes.
In the first set, a break in the opening game was enough for Zverev, while the second set went entirely without a break. In the tiebreak, it was Halys who clinched the set.
In the third set, the German also remained solid on his own serve, breaking Halys' serve for a 2-0 lead – and that was enough to win the match.
Bublik now awaits
In the round of 16, the current world number two in the ATP rankings will face Alexander Bublik (KAZ/ATP-22nd).
It is already clear: no matter how Zverev performs in Shanghai, he will finish the year as world number one. It is the first time in the 29-year-old's career that he will appear at the top of the world rankings.
