ÖTV Talent Sorger Narrowly Defeated by Former Top-30 Player
The 20-year-old from Graz put up a long fight against the Frenchman, but ultimately missed out on reaching the main draw in the tie-break of the third set.
Bitter defeat for Austria's tennis talent Sebastian Sorger!
The 20-year-old (ATP-388) was narrowly defeated 3:6, 7:5, 6:7(6) by former world No. 29, Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard, in the second qualifying round of the ATP 125 Challenger tournament in Bratislava.
Sorger had little impact against the French serving machine in the first set. Thanks to a decisive break, the first set went 6:3 to Mpetshi Perricard. The 20-year-old from Graz was far from securing a break at that point.
Comeback in the second set
The second set was much more contested. Sorger was initially able to fend off a break point at 3:3.
Shortly after, Sorger seized his very first break chance of the match at the best possible moment to take the set 7:5. The usually reliable server Mpetshi Perricard showed nerves, contributing decisively to Sorger's advantage in this game with two double faults.
Deciding Set Thriller
In the third set, Sorger once again put up a fight against the Frenchman. With no break opportunities, the tie-break had to decide the outcome.
The tie-break also turned into a real thriller. At 5:6, Sorger managed to fend off a match point, but shortly after, the Frenchman converted his second match point to win 8:6.
Rodionov in the Main Draw
Thus, Sorger narrowly missed out on a significant upset.
However, another ÖTV player, Jurij Rodionov, is in the main draw. The 27-year-old will face Italian Stefano Travaglia (ATP-159) in the first round.
