Shelton defends title in Montreal
The American has won the ATP 1000 Masters in Montréal. It is his second consecutive title in Canada.
Ben Shelton defeated fellow countryman Brandon Nakashima 6-3, 7-6 (4) in the final in Montreal.
The 23-year-old prevailed in just 87 minutes and finished the tournament without dropping a set.
So far, only Andy Murray, Novak Djokovic, and Rafael Nadal have managed to defend the title in Canada, where Montréal and Toronto alternate hosting duties each year.
First All-American Masters Final Since 2003
"To play the way I did here, without dropping a single set, that reflects my hard work and mental strength," Shelton said.
It is the first Masters final featuring only American participants in 23 years. Back then, Andy Roddick and Mardy Fish battled for the title in Cincinnati.
Shelton's victory moves him from tenth to sixth place in the world rankings. The American will now travel to the Masters in Cincinnati with great confidence.
