Erler knocks out defending champions in Chengdu tournament
The Tyrolean and his US partner Robert Cash prevail against last year's winners in the match tie-break.
Alexander Erler is in the quarterfinals of the ATP 250 tournament in Chengdu.
The 28-year-old Tyrolean, alongside his US-American partner Robert Cash, prevailed against defending champions Constantin Frantzen (GER) and Robin Haase (NED) with a score of 6:4, 4:6, 10:5.
After both duos remained untouchable on their own serve for a long time in the first set, Erler/Cash initially squandered four break points at 4:3. Two games later, however, they secured the decisive break for a 6:4 set win.
In the second set, it was Frantzen/Haase who struck first at 2:2, securing the set with a break to lead 3:2.
The match was thus decided in the match tie-break. Erler/Cash took control from the start and ultimately prevailed convincingly with 10:5.
In the quarterfinals, Erler/Cash will now face either the fourth-seeded duo Robert Galloway (USA)/Andre Göransson (SWE) or the French doubles pair Adrian Mannarino/Alexandre Müller.
