Ex-boxing world champion shot dead on his own doorstep
The former WBO world champion has been killed in South Africa at the age of just 38.
Sorrow for Zolani Tete: The former boxing world champion was shot dead in his South African homeland on Friday. According to police, the 38-year-old was murdered by previously unknown perpetrators outside his house in Mdantsane.
Tete was reportedly in his car when two armed and masked individuals opened fire. A 27-year-old woman, who was also in the vehicle, was injured and taken to a hospital. Tete succumbed to his injuries at the scene.
World Champion and Record Holder
Tete was the WBO bantamweight world champion from 2017 to 2019. The South African made particular headlines in 2017 when he knocked out his compatriot Siboniso Gonya in just eleven seconds. With this, he set the then-record for the fastest knockout in a world championship fight.
The WBO boxing world federation and South Africa's Sports Minister Gayton McKenzie expressed their deep shock and paid tribute to Tete as one of the country's outstanding boxers. The police are now investigating the background to the crime.
