Dominant! Weißhaidinger in the Discus Final
The Upper Austrian comfortably reached the discus throw final at the European Athletics Championships in Birmingham.
Lukas Weißhaidinger is in the discus final at the European Athletics Championships in Birmingham.
The 34-year-old threw the discus 65.06 meters on his very first of three attempts. This placed Weißhaidinger fourth in the preliminary round.
He then saved himself and forewent the other two attempts. In the run-up to the European Championships, the Austrian had been hampered by a slipped disc.
"Qualifying for the final means so much to me. I'm very humble today. I'm extremely happy that I managed it, it was difficult this year," said the European Vice-Champion from two years ago in Rome.
Weißhaidinger is combative about the final: "I'm looking forward to it and I have potential for more."
Second Discus Thrower Out
Will Dibo finished 27th out of 29 participants in his European Championship debut. The second Austrian only managed a throw of 55.31 meters.
"I'm not at all satisfied with the competition," Dibo grumbled.
The best performers in qualification were Lithuania's Mykolas Alekna (67.74m) and Slovenia's Kristjan Ceh (67.52m).
