MotoGP: Another Win! Marc Marquez New World Championship Leader
The Ducati rider celebrates his fifth win of the season at the San Marino Grand Prix. He is now only two points behind World Championship leader Jorge Martin.
Marc Marquez (Ducati) celebrates his fifth season victory in MotoGP at the Misano Grand Prix.
The veteran rider wins for the seventh time in his career at one of his favorite tracks.
In the Spanish festival in San Marino, the 33-year-old triumphs ahead of his brother Alex. Pedro Acosta on the KTM completes the all-Spanish podium.
Fermin Aldeguer, another Iberian, follows in fourth place. World Championship leader Jorge Martin (Aprilia) finishes only fifth after briefly holding the lead.
Bezzecchi Crashes Out Early
Marquez also benefits from the crash of local hero Marco Bezzecchi (Aprilia), who had secured pole position. The Italian crashed out on the first lap while leading.
On lap seven, World Championship leader Jorge Martin overtook leader Marquez. Five laps later, however, the nine-time world champion reclaimed his lead. Position 1 was no longer in danger thereafter. Martin subsequently fell far back.
Marquez Takes Lead in World Championship Standings
After his victory in Saturday's sprint race, Marquez had already reduced his deficit to Martin in the World Championship standings to just 14 points.
With eight race weekends remaining, Marquez now takes the lead for the first time this season. Both riders are on 274 points, but as it stands, the World Championship title would go to Marquez due to his higher number of season victories.
Next weekend, on September 20, the Austrian Grand Prix in Spielberg will be the next race.
