Verstappen confesses: "Was closer to quitting Formula 1"

Max Verstappen extended his contract with Red Bull Racing a few weeks ago until 2030, thus committing himself to Formula 1 for the future.

At the Spanish GP (3:00 PM in the LIVE ticker), the Dutchman is fighting for a podium finish on Sunday; Verstappen starts from P3.

In an interview with 'BILD,' however, the Red Bull driver provides insights into how the continuation of his Formula 1 career hung by a thread at one point.

"Ultimately, I was closer to quitting Formula 1 than signing with another team," Verstappen reveals. While he took talks with other teams seriously, he also "seriously considered calling it quits."

"I have nothing left to prove"

The 28-year-old also explains why retirement was even an option for him. "I love racing. I have nothing left to prove, I'm a four-time world champion and I achieved everything I ever wanted after my first title," Verstappen says.

He also doesn't race for the history books. "I race for myself, the team, and our fans," the Dutchman clarifies.

His decision to ultimately extend until 2030 was therefore a conscious choice based on conviction. "I've always made decisions based on my gut feeling and have never regretted it," says Verstappen.

Endurance racing as an additional appeal

Despite the extension, Verstappen continues to flirt with possibilities outside Formula 1. After his start at this year's 24 Hours of Nürburgring, the Red Bull star wants to compete in more endurance races.

"I can well imagine Le Mans, and Daytona also appeals to me," Verstappen explains. Red Bull gives him the opportunity to compete in other categories as well. "I want that in the future too – but it has to be on my terms."

A career in rally sport, however, is largely ruled out by the four-time world champion. He finds the discipline too dangerous – also considering his growing family.

In Formula 1, however, Verstappen wants to continue as long as racing brings him joy. "I will race as long as I enjoy it," says the Dutchman.
