40 F1 and MotoGP Circuits Evaluated

The renowned Italian engineering and architectural firm Studio Dromo took on the task of evaluating 40 Formula 1 and MotoGP circuits based on a total of 13 parameters.

Based on quantitative data from over 400,000 Google reviews, as well as a qualitative analysis of eleven experience dimensions of the fan journey, the study compares the tracks and shows why a legendary track layout does not necessarily guarantee a seamless spectator experience.

The winner: The Red Bull Ring in Spielberg.

Spielberg: Scenery, View, Cleanliness, and Organization as Success Factors

With 89.6 out of 100 possible points, the engineers and designers placed the racetrack in Styria at the top of the ranking.

Specifically, the location and the exceptional view of almost the entire track contributed to the victory. Further success factors include cleanliness, organization, and the alpine panorama. However, the Red Bull Ring received deductions for limited shaded areas and traffic jams during peak times.

Zandvoort (87.8) and the iconic motorcycle track Assen (87) followed in second and third place.

The study also unsparingly reveals that tradition and myth do not necessarily equate to a good spectator experience. Thus, iconic F1 tracks like Spa-Francorchamps (19th) and Monza (26th) plummeted in the ranking. Endless walking distances, hours-long traffic jams upon departure, and outdated sanitary facilities had a negative impact.

But new tracks also came in for criticism: Miami, Jeddah, and Las Vegas only landed in places 35 to 37 – especially for the latter, segregated areas and high ticket prices were responsible for the poor performance.

The last places were occupied by three MotoGP tracks: Aragon (38th), Le Mans (39th), and the Balaton Park Circuit (40th).
