Verstappen handed grid penalty
Following a battle in the second free practice, both the Dutchman and Liam Lawson are moved back on the grid.
Four-time world champion Max Verstappen and Liam Lawson have been penalized for an incident in the second free practice in Mexico.
Both drivers engaged in a battle over several corners in the tight stadium section of the race track. The New Zealander initially refused to yield, causing the two drivers to go side-by-side. Consequently, the Dutchman even drove over Lawson's front wing.
After the practice, both drivers were summoned to the stewards and each handed a one-place grid penalty.
Verstappen jabs at Lawson
After the practice, Verstappen commented on the situation to "Sky": "Perhaps not necessarily the smartest behaviour he displayed there. That won't greatly change my weekend."
Nevertheless, he sees Lawson as primarily to blame and refers to his future in Formula 1: "If I were him, I would behave a bit smarter. Especially when you're still fighting for your seat."
To date, Liam Lawson remains without a contract for the 2027 Formula 1 season.
