Lewis Hamilton had to wait almost two years for his first pole position with Ferrari.

But now in Mexico, it finally happened. The Brit celebrated pole with the "Scuderia" and prevailed against George Russell in a thrilling qualifying final.

The joy of the seven-time champion was, of course, immense.

Hamilton Overjoyed: "It feels great"

Because it's not only his first pole with the "Scuderia" but also his first pole position in over three years. He had been waiting for a pole since the Hungarian GP 2023.

"It just feels great. I'm speechless," said the 41-year-old in the post-qualifying interview.

For Hamilton, it is the 105th pole of his illustrious career. "I like the number! We did a great job," he added.

Pole in Mexico Very Difficult to Defend

However, Hamilton will not have an easy time at the start of the race. Because on arguably no other racetrack is it so difficult to defend a pole position all the way to the first corner.

The Mexico racetrack is characterized by a long run to the first corner. Drivers from the second row of the grid, in particular, can benefit from the slipstream. Immediately behind him and Russell, Charles Leclerc (Ferrari) and the now aspiring World Champion Kimi Antonelli form the second row.

For Antonelli, however, it will likely be a very special day. Because the Italian could crown himself the youngest F1 champion of all time.

Antonelli Nearing World Title: "It will be a big day"

For that, the Mercedes youngster only needs two points. The World Championship title is therefore practically ready for the taking.

"I will try not to think about tomorrow and get a good night's sleep. Tomorrow will be a big day, and I need to keep my emotions under control," said the just 20-year-old.

He will likely take the final step on Sunday (from 9 PM, of course, in our LIVE ticker >>>).
