A Rise That Could Hardly Be More Untypical
The path to Formula 1 usually seems prescribed for a driver: from karting, switching to regional series, and finally into open-wheel racing for the most talented youngsters in the F1 circus.
For Kimi Antonelli, however, the path was always different. After immediately claiming the title in Italian Formula 4, he also impressed in other junior series. Thanks to these successes, Antonelli skipped Formula 3 and, with strong performances in his debut season in Formula 2, paved his direct way into the premier class.
At just 13 years old, he made it into the Mercedes junior program. Five years later, the time had come. In 2024, Antonelli got the big chance to prove his talent in F1 during practice on Friday in Monza. But after just ten minutes, he got stuck in the gravel trap at Parabolica.
"That was the most difficult moment in his career. A moment where everyone had doubts," recalls Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff. Nevertheless, the Viennese placed his trust in him and handed him Lewis Hamilton's cockpit.
His Maturing Process Amazes the Competition
The management of the "Silver Arrows" was aware beforehand that it would require patience. That's why Wolff and Co. urged forbearance even after several errors in his debut season. Antonelli still seemed tense and too determined.
Only a few months later, however, Antonelli developed into a true winning driver. He impresses and combines great talent with a considerable learning pace, already demonstrating a coolness throughout the entire 2026 season that is usually only seen in experienced drivers. Furthermore, Antonelli also brings a youthful freshness and great joy in pure racing to the paddock.
Precisely for this reason, it also seemed as if his Mercedes teammate George Russell would be fighting a losing battle throughout the entire season.
Before the start of the season, the Briton was actually considered a major title favorite. Russell finally had a competitive car, with which the world championship title seemed almost within reach. However, Antonelli, with his triumph in Monte Carlo and his comeback in Monza, stifled every world championship hope of Russell's in its infancy.
A Talent Striving to Emulate His Childhood Idol
It's no wonder, then, that parallels are immediately drawn with the youngest F1 champion to date. For Sebastian Vettel also stood out as a youngster with his carefree attitude. However, as soon as he got into his car, his ruthless driving style became apparent. It's no coincidence that the German was also Antonelli's childhood hero.
His predecessor, Hamilton, also recognized his early talent. "I would take Kimi," said the record champion even before Antonelli's F1 debut regarding his succession. The Briton presumably remembered his own entry into Formula 1.
Hamilton also signed a contract with a top team, McLaren, in 2006, immediately upon entering Formula 1 with no prior experience. Alongside him, Fernando Alonso after his two world championship titles with Renault, moved to McLaren. Already in the first race, he challenged the Spaniard and drove onto the podium. He almost rewarded himself with the world championship title in his first season, which would finally follow a year later.
A New National Hero Ends the Long Dry Spell
For an athlete, however, the enthusiasm for their achievements in their home country is naturally also important. Antonelli only ignited this euphoria, despite his rapid ascent, thanks to his home victory in Monza. With heavy hearts, the "Tifosi" had previously followed his first GP victory in China and his early winning streak.
Now, however, he has also earned a hero status in Italy. To finally enter the history books, only one last step remains. Then, after Alberto Ascari's second world championship title 73 years ago, the Italians will once again have a world champion. A period of suffering that is coming to an end!
