Blatant Capitals errors: "We sometimes gift the opponent goals"

As in Linz, the Viennese are not error-free against the champions either, and once again leave the ice as losers. Coach Mike Stewart tries to remain calm.

One is currently inclined to say, in the case of the Vienna Capitals, that it's Groundhog Day.

Following their self-inflicted defeat against Black Wings Linz on Sunday afternoon, the Viennese suffered another loss against Graz99ers. Match report >>>

After just 13 minutes, Head Coach Mike Stewart's team was 0-2 down, with the defensive structure ultimately lacking for both goals conceded. Both Jakob Lippitsch and Maximilian Kirchebner were left alone for their goals.

"We have to minimize blatant errors. We are currently gifting the opponent too many goals, that's too much in professional ice hockey," Stewart didn't hold back criticism when speaking to LAOLA1.

Goal-scoring drought

The start to the game wasn't bad, with Konstantin Komarek hitting the outside of the net in an early power play. "We came into the game with energy," the head coach was pleased with this aspect.

Even after the goals conceded, the Austro-Canadian saw "more than a few good chances" from his team. But there's currently a certain scoring drought in front of the goal. "We have to find a way to score more goals," said Stewart.

Wir sind in einer schwierigen Phase momentan. Es ist wochenlang gut gelaufen, jetzt ist es etwas holprig.

Former 99ers defenseman Nick Bailen did so with a one-timer from the blue line, and in the middle period, the Capitals had several top chances to equalize. But they either failed due to their own inefficiency or Goalie Nico Wieser.

Difficult phase

Michael Schiechl's goal for the 1-3 from Vienna's perspective was the decisive moment, even though Simon Bourque's powerful shot from the blue line ensured an exciting final phase.

"The guys stuck with it, we fought our way back," Stewart said positively about the team's morale, "but we didn't have that last bit of puck luck."

He is not dissatisfied with his team's performance in the last two games, but the results are obviously not right. "That's part of a process, the season is long," the former VSV champion player assuages.

He admits: "We are in a difficult phase at the moment. It went well for weeks, now it's a bit bumpy. We have to stick together, then we'll find our way again."

Resurgent Salzburg awaits

The next opponent has achieved this - at least for now: Red Bull Salzburg.

After the dismissal of Head Coach Alan Letang, the "Ice Bulls" have won all three games under new coach Teemu Levijoki this week, routing the badly struggling Pioneers Vorarlberg 7-2 on Sunday.

"With fresh wind in their sails, Salzburg reacted well after the coaching change," says the 54-year-old. However, he doesn't want to focus too much on the former serial champions; the focus is on their own game.

Stewart: "We have to concentrate on ourselves, do our job better. Then our chances are good."
