Must-win for the 99ers! Graz celebrates first victory in Vorarlberg
Following an opening defeat in Bruneck, Graz secures their first win of the season. The champions only found goal-scoring success in the closing stages.
On Saturday evening, the Graz99ers prevailed against the Pioneers Vorarlberg with a 3-1 away victory in the second round of the win2day ICE Hockey League.
In the first period, the Pioneers offered the Graz team an open, yet goalless, exchange.
In the second period, the Feldkirch team also kept the game open against the reigning champions and could hope for a point. But in the final period, the Styrians were able to celebrate.
Late Goals on Both Sides See 99ers Celebrate
Nick Swaney scored the 1-0 lead for Graz on a counter-attack (55.). Just 70 seconds later, David Maier completed a passing play to make it 2-0 (56.).
However, the Vorarlberg team found their way back into the game after a holding penalty by Clay Hanus. Blake Murray scored on the rebound to make it 1-2 from the home team's perspective (58./PP1).
Ultimately, an empty-net goal by Josh Currie (58./SH) sealed the first season victory for last season's champions.
