Ninth Consecutive Win: Graz99ers Remain VSV's Bogey Team
The Murstadt team continues its upward trend with a dominant victory against the Eagles.
On the 18th matchday of the win2day ICE Hockey League, the Graz99ers defeat VSV 4:1.
An active start to the game by Villach went unrewarded. As the 99ers found their rhythm after almost nine minutes, the Styrians immediately took the lead. Josh Currie was served the puck by Paul Huber and precisely placed it into the far corner (9').
Just 70 seconds later, the 99ers extended their lead through Ole Björgvik-Holm. Chris Collins was so heavily impeded during his shot that a penalty against VSV youngster Jakob Sintschnig was signalled.
However, Björgvik-Holm inherited the puck and surprised VSV goalie Joe Cannata at the near post to make it 2-0, before Villach regained possession of the puck (10').
No "Eagles" Comeback
The second period was characterized by a fast-paced back-and-forth, but both goaltenders ensured with strong saves that further goals were long in coming.
Only 17 seconds before the second intermission, VSV managed to pull a goal back: Joel Teasdale deflected Ryan Sproul's shot from close range, making it unstoppable (40').
However, any comeback for the "Eagles" from Draustadt did not materialize in the final period. A penalty against the 99ers seemed to offer VSV an opportunity to equalize, but things turned out differently. Manuel Ganahl sprinted away from the Villach players and extended the lead to 3-1 for Graz while shorthanded (47'). Nick Swaney's goal into the empty net was merely the final touch (58').
With 30 points from 17 games, the 99ers are in sixth place in the standings. VSV is twelfth with 20 points, but has played two fewer games.
