Comeback Unrewarded: Salzburg Suffers Narrow Defeat
The third Austrian representative must thus bury their playoff dreams. Eisbären Berlin's early 4-0 lead was the key to victory.
EC Red Bull Salzburg suffers their fourth defeat on Matchday 5 of the Champions Hockey League. The home game against Eisbären Berlin ends 3:4.
The visitors from Berlin established clear dominance early in the first period, even though the "Ice Bulls" posed a dangerous threat to the opponent's goal twice on the power play through Böhm (4th) and Poisson (5th).
Berlin proved significantly more efficient: Fontaine confidently finished a counter-attack to make it 1-0 (6th). Geibel buried the puck from a distance impossibly into the top corner (6th), and then Kirk also found the gap with his shot from mid-range (13th).
Comeback in the Final Period
The second period began in the worst possible way for Salzburg, as Foudy made it 4-0 for the visitors just moments after the restart (21st). The hosts subsequently pressed for a goal to narrow the deficit, which they managed in the 34th minute: Lee tucked the puck into the net on a rebound after a counter-attack.
In the final period, the "Ice Bulls" displayed their comeback qualities. First, Robertson pulled the hosts back to 2-4 (46th), then Huber tapped in for 3-4 (53rd). However, Alan Letang's team could not manage the equalizer.
With the victory, Eisbären Berlin moved up to a playoff spot. EC Red Bull Salzburg remains on three points and must thus definitively bury their dream of the playoffs.
