After Germany's surprising World Cup exit against Paraguay (to the highlights>>>), it seems likely that no stone will be left unturned for the DFB XI.

While DFB sporting director Rudi Völler had still backed national coach Julian Nagelsmann immediately after the defeat, his continued stay at the DFB now seems anything but certain. His future is reportedly being intensively discussed internally.

"We don't want to simply move on"

DFB President Bernd Neuendorf made a clear statement from the German national team's camp in Winston-Salem before the players' individual departure.

"After the bitter defeat against Paraguay and the elimination from the World Cup in the USA, Canada, and Mexico, I sat down for a long time yesterday with national coach Julian Nagelsmann and the sporting management, including Andreas Rettig and Rudi Völler. We agree that our performance at the World Cup does not meet our standards," said Neuendorf.

Finally, the 64-year-old made it clear: "After such a setback, with a view to the upcoming tasks, we cannot and do not want to simply move on."

Nagelsmann would receive a high severance package

However, a sticking point in a potential separation could be the money. Nagelsmann's contract runs until 2028 and is said to bring him around seven million euros per year.

Although the DFB reportedly has a clause that allows for early contract termination, according to media reports, this only applies in the event of a group stage exit. Since Germany survived the group stage and only failed in the Round of 32, it is unclear whether a separation would even be possible without a high severance payment.

Will Jürgen Klopp take over?

Should the DFB part ways with Julian Nagelsmann, a prominent successor could already be waiting in the wings.

According to "Sky", Jürgen Klopp is reportedly ready to take on the role of national coach – provided the DFB approaches him.

"I understand my name is being mentioned. But it is not the moment. There is nothing to say about it," the current Head of Football at Red Bull still kept a low profile after the World Cup exit.
