Klopp Confirms DFB Talks: "Very Appealing Task"
Jürgen Klopp is the hottest candidate to succeed Julian Nagelsmann. However, the situation is not straightforward.
Jürgen Klopp has confirmed talks with the German Football Association (DFB) regarding the national team coaching position.
"Julian has resigned, and the DFB is looking for a successor and, in the course of these thoughts they've had, they approached me," Klopp said in his role as an expert on MagentaTV.
He spoke of a not-so-simple situation. "I really enjoy working for Red Bull, I have a team I work very closely with, and I've met many people over the last two years. You don't like giving something like that up, at least I don't."
On the other hand, a "very appealing and important task" awaits him. Intensive discussions would have to be held, "because, of course, the problems we currently have are not dependent on Julian Nagelsmann personally."
Talks with Mintzlaff to Follow
At the same time, the former Dortmund and Liverpool coach emphasized that there are still things to clarify with his current employer, Red Bull.
"Of course, I'm interested, but Oliver Mintzlaff is my first point of contact. Red Bull has to agree to the matter - and I believe they will agree." Also because German football is close to Mintzlaff's heart. Nevertheless, the talks still have to be held.
His contract as Head of Global Soccer at Red Bull runs until 2029. "I like to honour contracts," Klopp emphasized, "but I am interested in talks." It is important to him that Red Bull "comes out of this cleanly." "It's not that easy to get out of it."
Timing "Not Perfect"
In the past, the 59-year-old was repeatedly considered for the national coaching role. Even now, the timing is "not perfect. Nevertheless, it's better than it ever was. I'm more than recharged now. So I'm ready," Klopp said.
According to Klopp, German football is "at a turning point": "We now have to fundamentally change things. Whether that will be me in the end or whoever it will be, that doesn't change the fact that changes are necessary."
Favourite to Succeed Nagelsmann
Julian Nagelsmann had resigned as head coach of the German national football team a few days after their failure in the World Cup Round of 16 against Paraguay.
"Regarding the re-filling of the coaching position, the DFB leadership will now seek talks with Jürgen Klopp. He has already signaled his fundamental willingness to take on the role," a DFB statement said on Friday during the day.
The 59-year-old Klopp has been Head of Global Soccer for Red Bull GmbH since January 2025. Before that, Klopp was a very successful coach at Borussia Dortmund and FC Liverpool.
