Haaland scores late winner: Norway reaches World Cup Round of 16

Norway reaches the World Cup Round of 16 after a late 2-1 victory against Ivory Coast. There, a clash with record world champions Brazil awaits on July 5 (10 PM).

The Ivorians get off to a better start and dictate the first half, without really becoming dangerous. Pepe initially misses the best chance, failing to connect cleanly with a cross from Diomande.

Erling Haaland was barely seen in the first 30 minutes. The striker had only one touch of the ball until then.

Nusa scores spectacularly

Against the run of play, Norway takes the lead: Antonio Nusa impressively beats his man in a one-on-one in the 39th minute and curls the ball spectacularly into the top corner from the left side of the box.

Just three minutes later, the Scandinavians have a great chance to double their lead. Haaland gets a header from close range, but Sangare crucially deflects the attempt.

After the break, Ivory Coast creates a double chance. A shot from Doue is blocked, Pepe takes a follow-up shot, but the ball goes too centrally to Nyland (55').

Diallo strikes back

In the 67th minute, Norway then has a great chance to seal the win. Heggem gets a shot on the run after an Odegaard corner, which is blocked on the line by Diallo.

Six minutes later, Diallo is again the focus – and this time on the other side. The ManUnited player dribbles through half of Norway's defence after a one-two with Nicolas Pepe and then slots the ball into the far corner (74').

Haaland scores the decisive goal

Shortly before the end, the Norwegians take the lead again: A strong pass from Bobb to Berg into the penalty area initiates the play. Berg breaks through three defenders and delivers a sharp ball into the middle, where Haaland only has to tap it in in the 86th minute.

The Norwegians withstand Ivory Coast's late offensive. Diallo has the best chance in the fourth minute of injury time with a powerful free-kick that Nyland scrapes out of the top corner.

Thus, the Scandinavians reach the Round of 16, just like in their last World Cup participation in 1998. Back then, they were eliminated against Italy.
