The Canadians play a great first half but fail to capitalize. Morocco, on the other hand, impresses tonight with high efficiency and excellent transition play.

The first team to reach the quarter-finals of the FIFA World Cup 2026 is Morocco! The semi-finalists from four years ago defeat Canada, coached by Jesse Marsch, 3-0.

A brace from Azzedine Ounahi (50th, 82nd minute) with their first two shots on target secures the decisive lead, while Soufiane Rahimi makes the scoreline emphatic in stoppage time (90.+8).

Brave Even Without Home Advantage

Although the Canadians are co-hosts of this World Cup, their second-place finish in the group behind Switzerland means the "Maple Leafs" must play their round of 16 match in Houston, more than 1,700 kilometers from the Canadian border.

Accordingly, the home advantage is minimal, but Canada, where the still-injured Alphonso Davies does not feature, remains undeterred.

Jonathan David tested Morocco's goalkeeper Bono within minutes, and shortly after, the custodian was alert to make a strong foot save against Tani Oluwaseyi.

Canada with Good Pressing Before the Break

Although Morocco had plenty of possession, they struggled to find their rhythm against the tenacious Canadians. Instead, they suffered an injury shock: Ismael Saibari, who had been strong in this World Cup and is set to join FC Bayern after the tournament, had to leave the field in the 23rd minute with a thigh injury.

After the water break, the North Africans also had their first attempt, but Canada's goalkeeper Maxime Crépeau had no major problems with Soufiane Rahimi's shot, who came on for Saibari.

Following this, there were many duels and fouls, often resulting in yellow cards. Morocco improved defensively until halftime but could not make an impact offensively against the still alert Canadians.

Clever Free-kick Routine Brings the Turnaround

However, Morocco emerged from the locker room much stronger, and it paid off immediately: Achraf Hakimi played a free-kick low into the middle, where Canada neglected Azzedine Ounahi, who struck from the edge of the box, precisely curling the ball with the inside of his foot into the right corner (50th minute).

In the second half, the Canadians seemed to be paying the price for their high energy expenditure in the first 45 minutes; they created significantly fewer dangerous transition moments and thus had fewer scoring opportunities. The "Atlas Lions," on the other hand, remained compact at the back without investing much in attack.

At the start of the final fifteen minutes, the North Americans found an excellent free-kick position, but David chipped the ball over the crossbar from a meter behind the penalty area. Yet, Canada didn't give up; Tajon Buchanan forced a save from Bono with a powerful long-range shot.

Strong Transition Play Secures Quarter-final Berth

Now the efficient Moroccans were clinical again; a perfectly executed counter-attack initiated by Hakimi found Brahim Diaz, who maintained composure and laid the ball off to Ounahi, who gave Crépeau no chance in goal – a brace (82nd minute)!

Canada now had to take risks, and Morocco countered again, but Rahimi's header only hit the crossbar this time. Despite this, the co-host threw everything forward in the final stages, but a truly dangerous scoring opportunity eluded them.

Instead, the Moroccans sealed the deal; another high-tempo counter-attack saw Rahimi finish clinically past the opposing goalkeeper, slotting the ball into the far corner (90.+8).

Thus, Morocco becomes the first team to advance to the quarter-finals, where they will face the winner of Paraguay vs. France on Thursday in Foxborough.
