During the squad announcement for the upcoming Nations League international matches against Kosovo (Sept. 24), Israel (Sept. 27 and Oct. 04), and Austria (Oct. 01), Ireland head coach Heimir Hallgrímsson was asked how difficult it was for his players to focus on football.
The question was likely posed against the backdrop of the armed conflicts in the Middle East.
"We are not playing with genocide, we are playing against genocide," said head coach Hallgrímsson, adding: "We are playing against Israel; we are not playing with Israel."
The Israeli Football Association reacted with indignation to the 59-year-old's statement, calling the use of the word 'genocide' the epitome of "stupidity, ignorance, and hypocrisy."

On X, the Israeli Football Association extensively commented on the remarks on Monday evening: "We have contributed to the world and humanity in countless areas, winning an impressive number of Nobel Prizes. Unfortunately, we have not yet found a cure for the stupidity, ignorance, and hypocrisy displayed by the coach of the Irish national team."
Alluding to the 59-year-old's phrasing, the Israeli Football Association added: "We are not playing with ignorance, hypocrisy, and stupidity, but against the coach who embodies these characteristics." According to Israeli media reports, the Israeli Football Association is considering filing a complaint with UEFA. However, no complaint had been received by UEFA as of Monday evening.
Hallgrímsson also reiterated a statement made last year, according to which he could not understand why Russia was banned by FIFA and UEFA after the invasion of Ukraine, but Israel was not sanctioned for its actions in Palestine.
Israel will face Austria in the UEFA Nations League opener on Thursday (from 8:45 PM in the LIVE ticker >>>). On Sunday (Sept. 27), the "home match" against Ireland will take place at the alternative stadium in Debrecen.
