Surprise! Barca Legend New Netherlands Head Coach
The former midfield maestro had been without a job since his departure from FC Barcelona. Now he succeeds Ronald Koeman.
The Netherlands has a new head coach!
As the association announced on Wednesday evening, Xavi takes over the national team with immediate effect. The Spaniard signs a contract until 2030, thus succeeding Ronald Koeman.
The 46-year-old most recently coached FC Barcelona but was dismissed there in the summer of 2024. Now he coaches a national team for the first time.
Debut against Klopp
Xavi will celebrate his debut as head coach on September 24 against Germany, led by new coach Jürgen Klopp.
For Xavi, the Netherlands is his third coaching spell. From November 2021 to summer 2024, he coached Barca in 143 matches, prior to that he spent two years with Al-Sadd in Qatar.
As a player, the former midfield star collected titles with both Spain and Barcelona, including the 2010 World Cup. At that time, his "Furia Roja" famously triumphed against the Netherlands.
