Austrian involved! Match Abandoned in Eredivisie
Nicolas Binder and SC Cambuur were heading for another victory before riots in the away section led to the match being abandoned.
Saturday evening in the Dutch Eredivisie ended with a major incident:
The match of the 11th matchday between SC Cambuur and Go Ahead Eagles had to be abandoned in the 81st minute with the score at 4-0 to Cambuur and will subsequently not be continued.
The reason for the abandonment was fireworks that were set off and thrown in the away section by Go Ahead Eagles fans. After the second stoppage in the 81st minute, the referee team, together with local security personnel, decided not to continue the match.
Go Ahead Eagles CEO Jan Willem van Dop stated after the match in a club statement: "As a club, we distance ourselves from this behaviour and do not tolerate it. We regret the incident and are ashamed. This small group spoils the reputation of everyone else."
Match awarded 4-0 to Cambuur
The Dutch FA has since announced that the result at the time of abandonment - 4-0 to SC Cambuur - will stand.
This is good news for Nicolas Binder. The Austrian international is currently on a roll with promoted side SC Cambuur. They haven't lost a match since the end of August. With 15 points, the club is in eighth place in the Eredivisie.
Binder has contributed with five goals and two assists so far this season. Although he was not involved in any goals against Go Ahead Eagles, he was once again in the starting XI and was substituted in the 68th minute with the score at 3-0.
