Confirmed! Wöber moves to the German Bundesliga

Maximilian Wöber joins Schalke 04. The Bundesliga promoted side announced this on Wednesday evening.

The 28-year-old terminated his contract with Leeds United and moves to Gelsenkirchen on a free transfer.

The Austria defender signs a contract until summer 2027 at coach Miron Muslic's club. The contract is reportedly heavily performance-related.

"Maximilian Wöber brings the experience of over 170 top-flight matches and, through his stints in Mönchengladbach and Bremen, also knows the special challenges in the Bundesliga," says Youri Mulder, Director of Professional Football at FC Schalke 04.

Long injury history

The left-footed player is believed to be able to "regain his full potential" at Schalke. For this, the coaching team with Miron Muslic will work intensively with Wöber.

The 31-cap international brings a long injury history, having only made 13 competitive appearances in the last two seasons.

Last year, Wöber was on loan at Werder Bremen but suffered a severe thigh muscle injury in August, which sidelined him for months. The central defender only made his comeback in mid-April.

The North Germans let the purchase option of four million euros, enshrined in the loan agreement, expire.
