0:7! Werder Bremen Suffers Friendly Debacle
The club of Marco Friedl, Marco Grüll, and Alexander Schlager suffers a more than emphatic defeat against a Dutch top-flight team.
Werder Bremen experienced a true debacle in a friendly match against Dutch top-flight club Twente Enschede.
The club of Marco Friedl, Marco Grüll, and Alexander Schlager lost comprehensively by a score of 0:7. Werder was already 0:6 down at halftime.
And this, despite numerous well-known names being in the starting eleven, even in the absence of many national team players. Among them were Niklas Füllkrug, Ludovit Reis, and Mitchell Weiser.
"Received a Wake-Up Call"
"It is incredibly difficult for me to explain this performance," said Bremen coach Daniel Thioune to German media after the match.
He stated they had wanted to use the friendly to "bring players like Füllkrug and Weiser closer to the team." That went terribly wrong, and they "received a wake-up call that we are not allowed to perform without 100 percent resilience, readiness, and quality," a dejected Thioune stated.
Peter Niemeyer, Head of Professional Football, made it clear that "we cannot present ourselves like this. We need to work through this." He said they thought they were already a step further and knew "that we always have to reach our maximum to be competitive. Taking one step less is not an option. Of course, I am disappointed with the performance. Nevertheless, we can put it into perspective, we will work through it, and then it's about clearing our heads."
