Another career setback: Sanches' contract with PSG terminated
Renato Sanches suffers another blow – after being demoted to the U23s, the Portuguese player's contract with PSG has been terminated.
Renato Sanches once again faces a significant downturn in his career.
As reported by L'Equipe and transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, among others, the contract of the former mega-talent has been terminated by mutual agreement.
This development, however, does not come out of nowhere: The Portuguese player was already demoted to the U23s at the beginning of July – now he is available on a free transfer.
Never lived up to early praise at Bayern
In 2016, the now 29-year-old midfielder was still awarded the Golden Boy and moved from Benfica Lisbon to FC Bayern München for 35 million euros.
He never truly settled at the German record champion – after 25 appearances in his debut season, he was loaned to Swansea City the following season, where he played only 16 games, mainly due to injuries.
After another forgettable year with just 24 matches for Bayern, Sanches moved on to OSC Lille for 20 million euros.
Sanches thrives at Lille
In France, the Portuguese international revitalized his career, playing a total of 91 matches for "Les Dogues," scoring seven goals and providing ten assists, and even winning Ligue 1 in 2020/21.
With his performances at Lille, he increased his market value to 28 million euros according to "transfermarkt.com" and played four games for Portugal at EURO 2021.
In the following season, Sanches and Lille celebrated victory in the French Supercup over PSG, and a few days later, the midfielder moved to the Parisians.
Injuries cause another career downturn
At "Les Rouge-et-Bleu," a meniscus injury initially set the midfielder back, but over the course of the season, he played his way into the starting XI alongside stars like Neymar and Kylian Mbappé, ultimately making 32 appearances.
In 2022/23, Sanches played only 27 games in total due to injuries and was loaned to AS Roma the following season. At his loan spells in Italy, Benfica, and Panathinaikos, the former mega-talent was once again plagued by injury misfortunes.
Now, the PSG chapter for the 29-year-old finally comes to an end. His market value is currently only two million euros. Nevertheless, there are interested parties: Hull City, Ipswich Town, FC Torino, and Sporting Braga are reportedly keen on Sanches.
