After Arsenal the day before, the Carabao Cup round of 16 almost saw another favourite eliminated.

Brighton & Hove Albion led the Premier League leaders, who were not playing with all their stars, 2-1 until the 72nd minute, but ultimately lost in a penalty shootout.

Malick Yalcouye gave the "Seagulls" the lead after half an hour, only ten minutes later Mateo Kovacic equalized to 1-1.

ManCity defeats Brighton in penalty shootout

After the break, the visitors got off to a dream start and Georginio Rutter put them ahead again (47th minute), but Vitor Reis deflected a Rayan Cherki free-kick unstoppably for 2-2 in the 72nd minute.

In the penalty shootout, Brighton keeper Jason Steele saved against Kovacic, but immediately afterwards Yasin Ayari failed to beat Geronimo Rulli. After Cherki converted the fifth penalty for the "Citizens", Lewis Dunk missed the "Seagulls'" final attempt.

Michael Svoboda, who had only played five minutes for Brighton this season and received a yellow card in the eleventh minute, started for the visitors and was replaced by Dunk in the 85th minute.

Danso successful against Schuster

In the Austrian duel between Kevin Danso and Jannik Schuster, the former Tottenham player emerged victorious.

AFC Sunderland was already leading 3-0 after goals from Chemsdine Talbi (26th), Timur Tuterov (29th) and Malick Fofana (39th). Callum Wilson scored for FC Brentford before the half-time whistle, but Igor Thiago's goal in stoppage time came too late (90'+4).

U21 national team player Schuster, who received a yellow card, played the full match, as did Danso on the opposing side.

Fulham eliminated without Affengruber

Fulham FC was also eliminated. Without David Affengruber, who was rested and not in the squad, the "Cottagers" lost 0-1 to Crystal Palace in front of their home crowd.

The top match between FC Liverpool and FC Chelsea went to a penalty shootout. After 90 minutes, it was 1-1 - Morgan Rogers (40th) and Cody Gakpo (43rd) scored from penalties.

From the spot, the "Reds" held their nerve: The hosts initially couldn't capitalize on Valentin Barco's miss, as Kostas Tsimikas missed immediately afterwards. Conversely, however, former Sturm striker Emmanuel Emegha also failed to score after Ryan Gravenberch missed.

The decision was only made after the ninth shooters: Wesley Fofana sent the final penalty over the bar.

Another surprise was provided by AFC Bournemouth, managed by the former Salzburg coach, who eliminated Aston Villa with a 3-0 win.
