On September 21, 2023, Florian Flecker’s interim 1-0 goal against Liverpool FC in the UEFA Europa League allowed LASK to dream of an upset.

Just over three years later, the 30-year-old from Voitsberg struck again against the "Reds" – and on the biggest possible international stage. This time, however, the circumstances were entirely different: At the time of his first goal, the Linz side were already trailing 1-6 in their home debut in the UEFA Champions League. With his two goals, he put the finishing touch on a 3-6 goal spectacle.

That was also why, after the match, frustration over the weak performance predominated: "We started with too little energy, we weren't aggressive enough. Then we conceded a set-piece goal, which shouldn't happen in a match like that, followed by the double blow for 2-0. Then it's naturally difficult against an opponent like Liverpool."

Flecker: "I'm more 'annoyed' that we lost the match"

After LASK had little to counter the visitors from Liverpool in the first half, Dietmar Kühbauer reacted at halftime, bringing on Florian Flecker, the man who provided some cosmetic improvement to the scoreline with his brace. What do the two goals mean to him?

"I honestly don't care. I'm more 'annoyed' that we lost the match. Maybe in a few days, I'll be able to put it into perspective differently. But right now, the disappointment prevails," said the Linz double goalscorer, who also praised assist-provider Yvan Dibango to "CANAL+", stating he "received two great balls" from him.

For LASK, it was their fifth consecutive game without a win across all competitions. For Florian Flecker, it's no reason to worry: "You have to look at who we played against. When such matches are added to a run like that, it sounds worse than it is."
