Why Liverpool's Win Over Atletico Was "Very Important"

Things can change so quickly.

Around a week and a half ago, following two draws at the start of the Premier League season, there was already talk of a false start for FC Liverpool. In the last five days, the tide seems to have turned.

The 2-0 victory over Ipswich Town generated the first positive headlines, and with newfound confidence, Atletico Madrid was also overcome in the opening match of the UEFA Champions League group stage. A 2-1 success was celebrated at Anfield Road.

Important Days for Iraola

"The last few days have been very important for Iraola," says CANAL+ expert Johnny Ertl. The triumph over Ipswich and the 90-minute performance against Atletico "promise a lot" for the future.

In three of their four competitive matches, the "Reds" have fallen behind 0-1, but they never left the pitch as losers. "The team has character and can come back even after conceding," says Ertl.

Florian Kainz saw a "good first half" from Liverpool in the duel with the "Colchoneros", although Atletico had taken the lead through Marcos Llorente.

Dominik Szoboszlai's equalizer, just minutes before the end of the first half, was not undeserved. Shortly after the break, the game was turned around by Alexis Mac Allister. "In the end, it was a deserved victory for Liverpool," says Kainz.

Atletico Knows How to Handle It

Atletico, on the other hand, has to contend with another setback. Over the weekend, the Madrid side suffered their first defeat of the season against Athletic Bilbao (0-3), and now their start in the Champions League has been unsuccessful.

Christopher Trimmel sees no reason to panic: "Atletico has enough experience to handle this. Liverpool had better stability in this game; offensively, Atletico didn't produce much in the second half."

Especially for Liverpool, the home win was essential for the rest of the group stage. "You want to win your home games so that it's easier in the long run," emphasizes the Union Berlin professional.
