Baumgartner shows emotions after comeback
The Austrian is back on the pitch and celebrated his comeback against Real Madrid.
For Christoph Baumgartner, it was anything but an easy summer. After a strong season with RB Leipzig, his career highlight – the World Cup with Austria – would have been next.
However, nothing came of it, as the Lower Austrian injured his thigh during the warm-up before the friendly match against Tunisia in preparation. What followed was the long road back.
On Wednesday, he celebrated his comeback for RB Leipzig against Real Madrid, contributing the assist for Leipzig's only goal in the 1-4 defeat to Real.
For the attacking player, it was anything but a normal game. "The whole day was very, very emotional. There were even a few tears involved. I'm just happy to be back," Baumgartner told media representatives.
Wife with motivational photos
His wife made the day even more special. As Baumgartner revealed, she sent him photos from the past four months before the game, showing the ÖFB star working on his comeback.
"Of course, there are some impactful pictures. For example, when I think back to the time in Finland for the operation, the flight to America, or the time spent there. It was all very special. I'm glad I got through that time so well," says the 27-year-old.
The Austrian is now looking forward. With nine points from six games, Leipzig have not had an ideal start to the league season. With Baumgartner back, they can at least rely on a key player from last season again.
