Atletico down to ten men, earn point against Stuttgart
After a strong first half, the Germans lose their way a bit in the second period. Meanwhile, Roma celebrate a dominant victory and PSV also win.
VfB Stuttgart had to settle for a single point on the third matchday of the UEFA Champions League.
At home, Sebastian Hoeneß's team only managed a 1-1 draw against Atletico Madrid. The Germans dominated for long periods and even played with a man advantage for 30 minutes.
Stuttgart, for whom Yanik Spalt was not in the squad, started very strongly right from the off. In the very first minute, Bilal El Khannouss had the opener on his foot, but the Moroccan's low shot was denied by a superb save from Jan Oblak.
Even after that, the Germans remained in control and created countless chances. They deservedly took the lead in the 36th minute through a long-range shot from Jamie Leweling.
Red Card for Former Admira Player Hjulmand
The second half could not have started worse from Stuttgart's perspective. After excellent build-up play by Ademola Lookman, Julian Alvarez scored Atletico's equalizer with his first goal of the season (47').
After that, the game became more open. However, Diego Simeone's side weakened themselves in the 64th minute. Former Admira player Morten Hjulmand slid in from behind into Angelo Stiller near the halfway line in a completely over-motivated manner and was rightly shown the red card.
After that, VfB pushed forward again, but luck was missing in the decisive moments.
Narrow Win for PSV, Rout for Roma
Meanwhile, AS Roma celebrated a clear 4-0 home victory against Slovan Bratislava. The goals for the "Giallorossi" were scored by Mario Hermoso (21'), Nahuel Molina (39'), Niccolo Pisilli (52'), and Donyell Malen (58').
Kevin Wimmer remained on the bench for Slovan for 90 minutes.
PSV Eindhoven celebrated a much narrower victory against FC Porto. The Dutch champions won 1-0 away from home without the injured Paul Wanner. Guus Til scored the decisive goal.
