At WSG's Vienna Win: Barbarez Watches ÖFB U19 National Team Goalkeeper
Will Bosnia once again poach an ÖFB youth international? Wattens keeper Salko Hamzic appears to be on Sergej Barbarez's radar.
Is the ÖFB about to lose another talent?
As "Kicker" reports, Bosnia's head coach Sergej Barbarez was reportedly present at WSG Tirol's 1-0 victory over Austria Wien. The target of interest is believed to be the Wattens goalkeeper.
Following his move from Red Bull Salzburg to Tyrol, Salko Hamzic is WSG's starting goalkeeper – and holds dual Austrian-Bosnian citizenship.
Citizenship After Rangnick's Prospective Player Course
The Salzburg native was part of Ralf Rangnick's 2023 prospective player course, subsequently received Austrian citizenship, and has since made appearances for the U18 (three games) and U19 (nine games).
Prior to that, he had already attended a youth training camp for Bosnia and Herzegovina. In the U21, however, Salzburg youngster Christian Zawieschitzky has so far been given the nod.
Gazibegovic, Karic, Dedic and Mahmic Already Chose Against ÖFB
Hamzic debuted for the AKA U18 of the Red Bulls at age 14. Shortly before his 17th birthday, he made his first appearance between the posts in LigaZwa for the "Young Bulls" and played a total of 27 games for Liefering.
The goalkeeper would not be the first talent the ÖFB loses. Prior to this, Jusuf Gazibegovic, Emir Karic, Amar Dedic, and Ermin Mahmic, among others, had already chosen against Austria.
In Bosnia, however, another gap is now opening up in attack: Edin Dzeko has announced his retirement from the national team.
