ÖFB Goalie Almost Became a Center-Back
The Salzburg native reveals he would also have been accepted into the academy as an outfield player.
Salzburg native Alexander Schlager was in goal for Austria at the 2026 World Cup.
However, the 30-year-old could have chosen differently, as he now reveals in the "Ohne Filter" (Without Filter) podcast from "CANAL+".
In his youth, he also played as a center-back for FC Red Bull Salzburg. "I was able to decide until U15. Until U14, I did both. Then it was academy time, and I had to make a decision," Schlager said.
He was offered the opportunity to play as a center-back. "I simply realized that physically, it wasn't going to work out," he explained, justifying his subsequent choice of position.
