Will Phillip Verhounig – top scorer and captain – remain with FC Liefering?

This question has been raised frequently in recent weeks. The 20-year-old was recently linked with Wiener Austria, but most recently he played for Liefering again in a friendly match, though listed as a "trialist".

"It’s a bit of back and forth, there’s no clear clarity yet, and as long as there isn’t, he’s part of our squad,” explains head coach Danny Galm to LAOLA1.

Slightly Injured After U21 Training Camp

Verhounig was slightly injured after the training camp with the U21 national team, but is now fit again.

He would have deserved to play this weekend. “He trains diligently, he shows the character he has – to give his all every day,” explains the German.

After several years in the second division, the striker was able to showcase his quality especially in the calendar year 2026. He scored ten goals in eleven games and contributed one assist. “I hope he gets a top club, and that’s what he’s waiting for,” the coach concludes.

Season Start in Grödig

For Liefering, the new season starts on July 31 away against Kapfenberg, but before that, the final friendly match against Eintracht Braunschweig is scheduled for Thursday.

As the Red Bull Arena will be busy with events including the Supercup in August, Liefering will move their first two home games against Wels (August 21) and against Young Violets (August 21) to Grödig.
