DSV President skeptical ahead of Hirscher comeback
Marcel Hirscher receives a FIS wildcard, but the decision sparks discussion. DSV President Wolfgang Maier views the special treatment critically.
Marcel Hirscher receives a wildcard from the FIS, which spares the 37-year-old the detour via lower-tier races and high bib numbers. However, the special treatment does not only meet with approval in the ski racing community.
Wolfgang Maier, President of the German Ski Association (DSV), views a starting spot directly behind the top 30 as a privilege. The German accordingly assessed the special regulation for Hirscher critically in an interview with Web.de.
Maier is also quite skeptical about the Salzburger's comeback from a sporting perspective. He stated that "it is an extreme challenge in competitive men's racing to reach the previous level of performance again," according to the German.
Maier holds Hirscher accountable
Maier sees the responsibility for fulfilling the expectations associated with the wildcard primarily with Hirscher himself. The Salzburger, who will compete for the Netherlands, must prove what goals he is pursuing with his comeback and face the sporting reality.
Despite his critical assessment, Maier does not hold back on recognition. He admires Hirscher's past achievements and honors him as an "exceptionally successful and highly professional athlete."
