Former biathlete Galina Kuklewa has passed away.

According to the press service of the Russian federation, the former professional winter athlete died at the age of just 53.

Kuklewa won gold in the sprint at the 1998 Winter Olympics in Nagano and also secured three World Championship titles with the relay team. In her career, she won a total of nine World Cup races.

No information has been released regarding the cause of death so far.
